Why doesn't the us have mobile anti air units like russia?
No I really dont like those modified humvees and bradleys with stingers.
Im talking about something like Tor or Tunguska?
If we ever come up against a formidable foe whats gonna stop them from overwhelming our advancing forces with cheap fighters and bombers?
Not what I meant, I meant if we were ever to go to war with another country. US in that country fighting for some reason.
Ummmm, as much as I hate to point out the obvious... what "formidable foe" woudl that be? Truth be told U.S. ground forces have operated under conditions of total air superiority every single day since 1945. This is both a good and a bad thing. But in the real-world absence of such a "formidable foe" how do you write a requirement for an air defense system? How do you fund these air defense systems to meet a threat that doesn't exist? Cut back on the body armor budget in Afghanistan? The money has to come from somewhere.
The Soviet's developed a lot of ground-based air defense systems because NATO and in particular American air power scared the bejesus out of them. The Russian's since 1991 have continued to develop these products because there is an eager market of other nations that are scared to death of American air power and Russia needs the foriegn exchange. Those conditions do not exist on our side of the pond.
