How much does it cost to maintain a townhouse?
I'm looking at buying a condo/townhouse, and right now i'm looking at two places. One place has a higher premium, but covers maintenance, and one has a lower premium, but doesn't cover maintenance.
The question is, how much does maintenance cost me if I'm paying for it myself? It is a 1300 sqft townhouse [no yard]
Edit: It is a property built in 1980. Also, I haven't inspected it yet, but I will. Assuming the inspection shows no issues, how much would you guess?
I own a townhouse and I'm also the treasurer for the homeowners association. In almost all situations were multiple dwellings exist within a single structure the homeowners association is responsible for all the maintenance to the outside structure and any common areas. They are all so responsible for electrical, internal plumbing, roof leaks etc. So, your only expense will be for items on the inside of the home. As for a hard number I can't say. It will no doubt be a little higher when you first move in as you begin to make the home yours. I have lived in my home for 13 years and spend very little on maintenance...maybe about 200.00 dollars a year tops. I do spend a lot in renovations and keeping the place looking fresh.
