I think I saw a comet? or was it a meteor?
Yesterday at about 0030 GMT (8-30am malaysian time), I saw this huge orange fireball in the sky. It was, at first, shooting across the sky but it slowly started to drop straight down towards earth and began to slowly diminish after that. (Probably burning off in the atmosphere?) It had a blazing orange tail and it was really bright and fiery. Could it have been a comet or a meteorite or a meteor? No one I've asked seemed to have noticed it.. It was so gorgeous, I can't believe I saw it!
The sun wasn't completely up yet, and I saw the meteor in the west part of the sky, where there was little sunlight.
A comet would not move that fast, it would be big news everywhere, and it would be visible to almost everyone.
What you saw is called a bolide (more commonly called a fireball) - it is a small meteor (about the size of a grapefruit or so) that is burning from friction with the atmosphere.
Most amateur astronomers use the term to mean an exceptionally bright meteor that leaves a tail of burning material behind it and may even explode or fragment.
Congratulations - these objects are completely unpredictable and rare (estimates are that only one in a thousand meteors is large enough or the right composition to create a fireball).
